UTMSPACE Strategic Fund (USF)

General information (USF)

This research funding opportunity was introduced to encourage UTMSPACE staff (academic and non-academic) to engage in research activities and as an initiative to implement a systematic, transparent and effective work process.

Main Areas Of Focus:
The main focus areas are the 5 thrust areas of UTMSPACE projects that have been identified, namely Financial Development, Business Development, Product and Service Development, Operations Development and Human Resources Development or other areas that will be identified by UTMSPACE from time to time.

Grant criteria (USF)

  1. All proposal papers must adhere to the main areas of focus.
  2. The project leader is a permanent UTMSPACE staff currently serving at UTMSPACE, either academic or professional services (executive assistant and above) on a permanent position leading a research project.
  3. Project members may consist of UTMSPACE staff, UTM staff, staff from any institution of learning, or industry practitioners who are members of a research project. Project members must consist of at least one academic staff of UTMSPACE or UTM or any institution of learning
  4. The minimum and maximum number of members for a research project must be three (3) and six (6) respectively, excluding the project leader. Project members must have at least one academic staff.
  5. The amount of funds that can be applied for each research project does not exceed the maximum limit that has been set at RM 15,000.00.
  6. The duration of the research project is six (6) months. However, only one (1) extension is acceptable for a research project and the maximum extension period allowed is three (3) months.

Expertise Research Fund (ERF)

General information (ERF)

This research funding opportunity was introduced to encourage UTMSPACE staff (academics) to engage in research activities. The grant is also intended to contribute to the myRA score of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

The main focus area is the field of research thrust UTM
has been identified by the U.S. government as:

    • Sustainable & Resilient Urbanisation
    • Next Generation Systems & Networks
    • Smart Manufacturing & Materials Natural Products
    • Biorefinery & Biotechnology Energy security
    • Water Security, Biomedical Engineering & Healthcare Smart Mobility
    • (Smart Mobility Biomedical & Healthcare Engineering)
    • Smart Living & Sustainable Cities

Grant criteria (ERF)

  1. All proposal papers must comply with UTM’s research focus areas as in Appendix A.
  2. The project leader consists of academic staff (permanent) appointed by UTM and serving in UTMSPACE.
  3. Project members may consist of academic staff appointed by UTM, academic staff appointed by UTMSPACE, academic staff appointed by UTM currently serving in UTMSPACE academic staff from any institution of study, students from any institution of study m or industry practitioners who are members of a research project.
  4. The minimum and maximum number of members for a research project must be three (3) and six (6) respectively, excluding the project leader.
  5. The amount of funds that can be applied for each research project does not exceed the maximum limit that has been set at RM 20,000.00 (science and Technology) and RM 5,000.00 (non-science and Technology).
  6. The research project (location) will be conducted in Malaysia.
  7. Research project for one (1) year. However, only one (1) extension is acceptable for a research project and the maximum extension period allowed is six (6) months.

Potential Development Fund (PDF)

The research and Learning Resource Management Division (BPSP) is responsible for ensuring the implementation of research activities among UTMSPACE staff with the allocation of prudent grants. This research funding opportunity was introduced to encourage UTMSPACE staff and UTM staff serving in UTMSPACE (academic and non-academic) to start engaging in research activities, in line with UTMSPACE’s motto to lead lifelong learning. In addition, this initiative acts as a basic exposure related to research to young lecturers at UTMSPACE.

UTMSPACE research grants: the potential Development Fund covers several areas that support UTMSPACE as an international centre of Excellence in Lifelong Learning:

SP3: Academic Leadership
SP 4: Transnational Education
SP 5: Research in organizations
SP 6: Industrial Revolution 4.0

Grant criteria (PDF)

  1. All proposal papers must comply with the six (6) main areas of focus as listed above.
  2. The research project must be relevant to the objectives of the grant and in line with the UTMSPACE motto.
  3. The amount of funds that can be applied for each research project does not exceed the maximum limit set at RM 10,000.00.
  4. The minimum allocation for each project is RM 5,000.00.
    Research projects (location) will be conducted in Malaysia only (except for transnational education related fields).
  5. The duration of the research project shall not exceed six (6) months. However, the application for extension of the project period will be considered based on the performance or development achieved.
  6. Only one (1) extension is acceptable for a research project and the maximum extension period allowed is three (3) months.
  7. The project leader may consist of academic and non-academic staff (executives and above) appointed by UTMSPACE and appointed by UTM serving in UTMSPACE.
  8. The project leader may only lead one (1) research project at a time in the same phase. However, he can become a member for other research projects.
  9. All UTMSPACE staff and UTM appointees who serve in UTMSPACE are eligible to participate in research projects as members.
  10. The maximum and minimum number of members for a research project is six (6) and three (3) respectively, excluding the project leader.
