About Us

Higher education is a huge investment of time and money for the benefits of its graduates. The world currently revolves around the changes in the global economy, increased employment challenges and increasing opportunities from technological innovation due to the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
The Bachelor of General Studies is a new academic programme offered by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) that enables graduates to strengthen the 21st century life skills such as critical thinking, complex problem-solving, communication, information management and negotiation.
The programme is tailored to enhance graduates’ skills by providing variety of crossdiciplinary courses that students can choose from based on their interests, passions, and goals. Students have the opportunity of hybrid learning between management and human resources, psychology, humanities, data management, information analysis, or computing.
This allows for diversed experiences in learning from different faculties available in UTM through a structured 4-year undergraduate curriculum. The programme aims to nurture learners’ lateral thinking to operate in a crossdiciplinary environment and leading the industrial, communal and societal changes.
With its 12 faculties​, academias, and centres of excellence, students gain access to the best of talent and expertise in Johor Bahru campus. They will also be involved in active learning, which necessitates and helps students to become independent learners, responsible for their own learning process. This reflects on the connection between theory and practice within and across disciplines.
This special academic programme also offers flexibility for working professionals who intend to upgrade and improve their skills, creating an excellent lifelong learning pathways.
The program will be conducted based on 2U2H mode of study which is student will be go through 2 years learning process in the campus/university and 2 years at home through online distance learning mode of study.

  • Pass STPM or equivalent with a minimum PNGK of 2.00 Grade C (NGMP 2.00) for General Studies; And Grade C (NGMP 2.00) for TWO (2) other Subjects ; OR
  • Pass STAM with a minimum grade of Jayyid Jiddan ; OR
  • MOE Matriculation/ UA Foundation/ US Foundation or Equivalent with miniumum of CGPA ≥ 2.00 ; OR
  • Diploma or any other Equivalent Qualification Recognized by the Malaysian Government and Approved by the University Senate.
  • Passed the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM/ Equivalent) with at least Credit in Bahasa Melayu/ Bahasa Malaysia OR
  • Credit in Bahasa Melayu/ Bahasa Malaysia July Paper; AND
  • Obtained at least Band 2 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

1. What is UTM Bachelor of General Studies programme?

The Bachelor of General Studies Hons is a new academic programme offered by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The programme provides individuals with an opportunity to learn across five main disciplines.

These include management, science, computing, technology, and the humanities, getting the best of higher education from all the faculties at UTM. Through a structured 4-year undergraduate curriculum, learners cultivate their lateral thinking to operate in a cross-disciplinary environment. Therefore, this programme helps our undergraduates’ progress in government agencies and enterprise, pursuing their postgraduate studies as well as leading the change in industries, communities, and societies.

Students enrolling in our Bachelor of General Studies Hons will continue their studies at the UTM Johor Bahru campus, the only Malaysian public research university located in the Iskandar Malaysia economic region. With its 12 faculties, academies, and centres of excellence, students gain access to the best talent and expertise at UTM. They will also be involved in active learning, which necessitates and helps those students who are taking individual roles in the learning process. This reflects on the connection between theory and practice within and across disciplines.

2. What is the study mode?

The UTM Bachelor of General Studies programme is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. On a full-time basis, the programme will be conducted based on the 2U2H mode of study. Students attend lectures, complete assignments, and undergo periodical tests and end-of-semester examinations.

The total credit hours of the UTM Bachelor of General Studies programme are 126 credit hours. First, students must enrol in 19 credits of university general courses and 30 credits of programme compulsory courses. Secondly, they need to fulfil 45 credits of general studies elective courses. Next, they will complete 27 credits of specialised elective courses, enrolling in various courses across all the faculties at UTM in accordance with their career needs. Finally, the students are required to complete six credits of industrial training for the successful completion of a study course. An academic and career advisor will be assigned to each student to facilitate the development of a personalised curriculum structure throughout their study period.

3. What is the duration of the study?

It takes 4 years to complete the UTM Bachelor of General Studies Hons programme. The students’ academic load is spread over a course of eight semesters. Students can complete their studies for 2 years at Home and 2 years at the University (2U2H).

5. Where is the campus for UTM Bachelor of General Studies programme?

The UTM Bachelor of General Studies programme will be conducted at the UTM Johor Bahru campus.

6. Is accommodation provided for UTM Bachelor of General Studies programme?

Students enrolled under the UTM Bachelor of General Studies programme will have the option of staying at on-campus accommodation in UTM Johor Bahru. Students may also opt to stay at rented accommodations outside UTM Johor Bahru.
UTM strongly advises students to stay within the UTM Johor Bahru campus in order to access the various on-campus learning facilities.

Intake for the UTM Bachelor of General Studies programme occurs two times in a year. Students can choose to enrol in March OR October.
